‘Tis the season for engagements!

January 1st, 2012

‘Tis the season for 1 out of 4 wannabe husbands to bend a knee and pledge their love. November and December account for 26 percent of marriage proposals, according to a survey of 1,131 brides sponsored by the Fairchild Bridal Group, the publisher of “Modern Bride.” Now that so many couples have decided to tie the knot, statistics will also show that the #1 thing they will do next is make the decision of which DJ to hire for their wedding!

Well ok…that’s not exactly true. But since we’re talking about statistics, the DJ is in fact ironically the #1 thing guests remember about the wedding. So for all you newly engaged couples out there, congratulations on this very exciting time! Treasure this process and enjoy it. And always be thinking in the forefront about how the wedding vendors you hire will have an overall impact on you, your family and guests. Will guests remember all the “stuff”? Or will they remember the experience, and how they felt? For even more interesting statistics, click here.

Oregon Bride Magazine Best DJ Award Winner…

July 2nd, 2011

Last night Oregon Bride Magazine announced their Best of 2011 award winners. Unfortunately Bass is Loaded! did not make the list this year. So sad. I won the Best DJ award back in 2009, and didn’t even know it. A colleague of mine sent me a text message congratulating me. I looked on the Oregon Bride Magazine website, and sure enough there I was. I was shocked and very proud, as the award is voted on by past clients, peers in the industry, and pretty much anyone that wants to vote. It was total confirmation that the things I was doing in my business were being recognized. Now in today’s vast social media, by the looks of it wedding vendors are soliciting their friends, clients, and peers via social media to get votes. On the surface it would appear as if the companies with the most “friends” are the award winners? Surely that can’t be true, right? There are some very respectable vendors that made the list this year. I completely congratulate them. On the other hand there are many quality wedding businesses that missed the list entirely and don’t get the immediate opportunity to be found by brides and grooms that really need them.

Feels a lot like high school :)

Just sayin’…

Should you hire a friend for your wedding?

May 27th, 2011

Tomorrow I am heading to DJ a wedding for a great couple down in Ashland, Oregon. This was a fairly recent booking within 30 days of the wedding day. My clients were originally going to have a friend DJ for them. Turns out, the friend bailed and hasn’t been heard from since. Some friend. :( This is one of a handful of weddings I have booked over the years due to a friend of the bride or groom not coming through. Perhaps it’s a blessing in disguise. Sometimes the real damage happens when they DO show up.

So this begs the question, “Should you hire a friend for your wedding?” My two cents…no. When couples hire me, at some point I ask them about the other vendors they’ve hired. It’s important for me to know who all the players are. That’s part of my process. When a couple tells me they are considering having a friend do the photography, or the catering, or the wedding planning & coordinating, the first thing I always ask is “Does your friend do this professionally?” That can make all the difference in the world. A professional is an expert who is a master in a specific field. Professionals most often do what they do for a living, commercially, and not just at home for fun.

I’m not a major sports nut, but the NBA finals are going on right now. For a moment, compare your wedding to a big game in the NBA finals. You’ve put an enormous amount of work into this game. Blood, sweat, tears, countless hours of planning and strategy has gone into this day. Then, imagine someone made the decision to have a friend come in and be your point guard. Or visualize one of your friends being a referee. To save even more money, you could have another friend run the sound system and music programming for all your fans. That person could even use the microphone to talk to the crowd. For pictures, your cousin Glen has a new camera and is getting better and better all the time. He could come in and shoot. This will be fantastic! You probably see where I’m going with this. The game will still be played, but all of your fans will be disgusted by the game, upset with the referee, bored and unmotivated by your DJ, and weeks after the game when you look at the photographs, you’ll be in tears because every important shot you wanted was missed.

This is not a stretch. And I understand there are tremendous savings in having a friend help out at the wedding. Times are tough for all of us and every dollar counts. My advice? Don’t hire your friends, unless they are professionals in the industry. Plan your wedding early, with plenty of time to save up for the right players to do the job. I often talk with couples not just about the details here and now, but how they will feel 5, 10…25 years from now. When you look back on your wedding day, you don’t want to feel regret. You don’t want to push your wedding album to the back of the closet because you’re embarrassed to look at the pictures or show them to friends & family. You don’t want to relive your first dance when your DJ friend started playing the wrong song or the music just stopped while all your guests were watching you, or he got up and said something completely inappropriate or offensive. Those memories last a lifetime and you can never, ever go back and do it over.

If your friend is truly a friend, bring them in for your wedding. But only as a guest…

Wedding DJ or Wedding Entertainment?

April 21st, 2011

I’ve thought for years about whether I should call my profession a “Wedding DJ” or “Wedding Entertainment.” In recent years, the craze seems to be that we call ourselves “Wedding Entertainers” and that’s fine I suppose. For me that term immediate conjures up an image of someone cheesy showing up to DJ your wedding, someone with hats, props, bad jokes, and self-absorbed stories. But, for the purposes of SEO I’ll include the entertainment phrase in my website. I mean, I do afterall entertain guests at weddings. I DJ, I MC, I help plan, coordinate & direct the big day. I keep guests informed about what’s going on throughout the night. So yeah, I suppose that entertains people. But cheese has NO place in what I do for my profession. I DJ weddings in Seattle Washington, Portland Oregon, Boise Idaho, San Francisco California, Southern California. I help brides and grooms create a night that will be remembered forever.

It’s just that I think most people go to google and type “portland wedding dj”…

…yep

Great Wedding at The Adelmann in Boise, Idaho

January 9th, 2011

I was fortunate enough to DJ Tim & Keely’s wedding in Boise, Idaho at The Adelmann on Thursday January 6th. Besides the natural things you’d expect when you think of Boise – like snow, potatoes, and gorgeous views – there are also great people. The one thing that strikes me the most as I do weddings in other states is that people are people. Good people exist everywhere. Not only did I work with a great couple in Tim & Keely, I got a chance to really learn about their families at the wedding rehearsal, at dinner, and throughout the course of planning for this special occasion. No matter where in the world you live, the joining of two lives is an incredible experience that should be celebrated by everyone. I am truly blessed to be a part of it. I don’t just DJ weddings, I help make memories.
